When my nightlight blinks out, the shadows rise. They creep and crawl and sneak and slink to my bed. I'm scared of the dark. Daddy charges in to rescue me.
Page 2
Daddy's bathrobe is a knight's armor. His flashlight is a sharp sword. A giant stomps his feet and fee-fi-foe-fums on my ceiling. “Ahhhh!” I scream.
Page 3
Daddy points his sword and the giant is gone.
Page 4
"You know what I see?" Daddy asks.
"A friendly sea creature. It's yellow and has five sides. It looks like something in the night sky."
"Oh!" I say. “I see it now.” I'm not so scared anymore.
Page 5
Then a witch cackles in the corner. She tilts her spiky hat at me to cast a spell.
“Stop her!” I scream.
Page 6
Daddy rattles his armor and points his sword.
Page 7
“That's not a witch,” Daddy says. “It's something much bigger, way off in the distance. Maybe we can climb it someday. Do you see how it's capped with snow?”
“Oh!” I say. “I see it now.” I'm not so scared anymore.

Until a giant spider scuttles down my bedroom wall.
Page 10
“What else could it be?” Daddy asks. “Think of something that has willowy branches and green leaves.”
“Oh!” I say. “I see it. We can have a picnic under it.” I'm not so scared anymore.
Page 11
But the shadows keep bumping and thumping in the dark. A snake slithers and slips out of the closet.
Page 12
Daddy wraps me in his armor and hands me the sword. I point it at the snake.
Page 13
“Imagine it's something else,” Daddy says. I think and think and think.
“Aha!” I shout. “It's a toy. I can swing it over my head and jump when it comes back down. Do you see it, Daddy?”
“I do, I do,” he says. I'm not so scared anymore.
Page 14
Daddy kisses me goodnight and leaves me with the armor and sword. Shadows creep and crawl and sneak and slither. Huge rats scamper across the rug. I shriek and shut my eyes tight.
Page 15
I pull the armor closer around me, point my sword, and open my eyes.
Page 16
I laugh because I'm not so scared anymore. I imagine the shadows are something else. They have blue feathers and chirp me a lullaby. Do you see them?
